Chairman Richard Afasi has stated that he has never been involved in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, and is not engaged in any galamsey activities in Suhum.
According to him, the ongoing illegal mining activities being discussed are not taking place within the Suhum Municipality but in Abuakwa. He explained that Suhum and Abuakwa share a boundary, and although the illegal mining activities are occurring in Abuakwa, some of the activities have extended into Suhum territory.

He added that the Suhum Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Lydia Ohenewa, has taken action against the issue and has arrested some people involved.
Chairman Afasi also explained why the Suhum MP, Hon. Frank Asiedu Bekoe (Protozoa), has taken the matter seriously. According to him, during the 2024 election period, he confronted the MP on issues of illegal mining during a TV3 Community Engagement Programme.
Chairman Richard Afasi therefore emphasised that he is not involved in any illegal mining activities in Suhum and maintained that there is no galamsey activity within the Suhum Municipality.
